💡 Understanding Maintenance Margin Rate (MMR)
Exchanges use tiered MMR schedules. For example, on Binance BTCUSDT perpetual contracts, positions up to $50,000 require 0.40% MMR, $50,000–$250,000 require 0.50% MMR, and $250,000–$1,000,000 require 1.00% MMR. Liquidation occurs when equity falls below maintenance margin requirements plus closing taker fees.
What is Liquidation?
Liquidation occurs when a trader's margin (collateral) can no longer support their leveraged position. The exchange automatically closes the position to prevent further losses.
How Leverage Affects Risk
- 2x-5x: Lower risk, larger price movements needed for liquidation
- 10x-25x: Moderate risk, common for day trading
- 50x-100x: High risk, small price movements can liquidate
Warning:
Leveraged trading is extremely risky. Never trade with more than you can afford to lose. This calculator provides estimates – always verify with your exchange.
